Before the Real

Early 2016. An attempt to capture my earliest remembered visual impressions. Not a true example of “automatic” painting as it pertains to psychology, my process here was to combine conscious recollection with a free association of aesthetic choices.

The amalgam of imagined constructs… orbs of color and light, the encroachment of the exterior onto the interior, the unnatural perspective, the transparency of some aspects and the solidity of others… are a child’s analog of the world. Such is the portal to every fairytale and waking dream, before the real.
